What Safety Technology Comes Standard on the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500?
April 08 2026,
If you're shopping for a full-size truck, safety technology matters. Here's what you get at every level, and what upgrades are available as you move up the lineup.
GMC Pro Safety: Standard on Every Sierra 1500
Every 2026 Sierra 1500 includes GMC Pro Safety, a suite of collision-avoidance and driver-assistance technologies designed to help you stay aware on highways and job sites alike. These systems work together to monitor your surroundings and intervene when needed.
Core Safety Features (All Trims):
|
Feature |
What It Does |
|
Automatic Emergency Braking |
Applies brakes if a collision is detected |
|
Forward Collision Alert |
Warns you of potential front-end impacts |
|
Front Pedestrian Braking |
Detects pedestrians and brakes automatically |
|
Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning |
Helps keep you centred in your lane |
|
Following Distance Indicator |
Shows your distance from the vehicle ahead |
These features are standard on the base Pro trim, which means you get the full collision-warning and automatic-braking suite even if you're buying the most affordable Sierra 1500.
The system also includes Buckle to Drive, which prevents you from shifting out of Park until your seatbelt is fastened. Six airbags (front, side, and curtain) and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with traction control round out the core safety package. LED daytime running lamps are also standard across all trims.
Trailering Safety: Available Starting on SLE
If you tow regularly, the Sierra 1500 offers a second layer of safety technology focused on trailer awareness. These features become available starting on the SLE trim, with availability varying by trim level.
- HD Surround Vision: Multi-angle camera system that gives you a bird's-eye view of your truck and trailer
- Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert: Monitors blind spots on both sides, accounting for trailer length
- Rear Cross Traffic Braking: Detects vehicles approaching from the side when backing up
- Rear Pedestrian Alert: Warns you if someone is behind your truck or trailer
- Hitch Guidance: Helps you line up the hitch with the trailer coupler (standard on SLE and Elevation)
- Hitch View: Camera view of the hitch area for easier hookups
- Front and Rear Park Assist: Audible alerts when you're close to obstacles
Denali-Exclusive Safety: Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking
The Denali trim adds Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, which extends the system's detection range and improves response time in low-light conditions.
Denali Ultimate: Super Cruise Hands-Free Driving

The top-tier Denali Ultimate includes Super Cruise, GMC's hands-free driver-assistance system. Super Cruise works on compatible highways across Canada and the United States, using a combination of cameras, radar, and LiDAR map data to keep you centred in your lane.
The system includes a Multicolor Head-Up Display that projects speed, navigation, and Super Cruise status onto the windshield. A driver-attention system monitors your gaze to ensure you're watching the road, even when your hands are off the wheel.
Super Cruise is not autonomous driving. You remain responsible for the vehicle at all times, and the system will disengage if you look away for more than a few seconds.
AT4 and AT4X: Off-Road Safety Features
The off-road-focused AT4 and AT4X trims include the trailering safety features as standard equipment, plus red recovery hooks (AT4) or an AEV stamped-steel rear bumper (AT4X) for added durability in rugged terrain. Both trims feature an off-road suspension with a 2" factory-installed lift and monotube shocks, which improve stability on uneven surfaces.
The AT4X also includes Terrain mode, which adjusts throttle response, transmission shift points, and traction control settings for sand, mud, or rock crawling. While not a safety feature in the traditional sense, Terrain mode helps you maintain control in conditions where traction is limited.
What's Not Included (and Why It Matters)
The Sierra 1500 does not include adaptive cruise control on the base Pro trim. Adaptive cruise control is available starting on the SLE trim. If you spend a lot of time on long highway drives, adaptive cruise control is worth considering - it maintains a set following distance and reduces fatigue.
Rear Camera Mirror (which replaces the traditional rearview mirror with a camera feed) is available on higher trims but not standard. If you frequently haul tall loads that block your rear window, this feature is useful.

Visit Le Relais Chevrolet to Test the Safety Systems
The best way to understand how these systems work is to experience them in person. Our team at Le Relais Chevrolet can walk you through GMC Pro Safety, demonstrate the trailering cameras, and show you how Super Cruise operates on compatible highways. If you tow regularly or drive long distances, we'll help you determine which trim level gives you the safety features you'll actually use.
